A Summer’s Afternoon

It was a summer’s afternoon with the most beautiful weather. Admittedly, when I first walked into the space at the venue where the bride was getting ready with final details, I was originally taken aback by the fact that the room looked a bit dark, the space a bit cluttered, and let’s just say the decor was peculiar… I love how the first few photographs turned out! The whites and blues, and the soft tone of her skin in the first few photos is gorgeous, if I do say so. All you have to do in 95% of cases where a setting doesn’t initially seem ideal, is move to where the light is ladies; and the bay windows in one part of this room were perfect. And I have yet to find a room who’s decor is busy to the point of making it impossible to find clean and ethereal backdrops. If there is a love-for-finding-the-right-angle, there is a way. I make it my mission to never distract from the bride.

As for the rest of the day… how could you not love all that lush, green scenery, and all of those thoughtful details (many of them DIY, btw) that gave the overall ambience lightness, freshness, and a little bit of a vintage-rustic feel. Then, eclairs and macaroons, and multiple cakes! Oh, and string lights, always love those. All around a spectacular day with a lovely couple.

My very special thank you to Matt Dames for having me second-shoot this wedding. To many more! Cheers *clinking wine glass, against my monitor*

Jandilyn & Wilson – Suitcases & Willows

The first time I spoke with Jandilyn and Wilson, we ended up with a long list of ideas as to what we could do for their engagement session. More often than not, the hard part is narrowing possibilities down, instead of struggling to find them. I think what we came up with is a good balance between something playful involving a theme, and something more timeless; the best of two worlds!

It can be easy to get carried away with props, so for the travel theme I felt it was important to keep things subtle, since Union Station (also available for wedding receptions) has a lot to offer on its own. A couple of vintage suitcases –found at one of my favorite antique malls in LA  – a vintage copy of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights (bought at the Rose Bowl Flea Market), and some wardrobe details were enough to enhance the theme, while still allowing us to flow naturally through the space and get a fun series of shots.

After wrapping up at the station, we headed to a very secluded little haven in Griffith Park to avoid the more highly-trafficked areas of the park on a Sunday. Although there are some great more-well-known areas of the park that are beautiful, I tend to prioritize my clients’ comfort. That privacy allows them to be more natural, without having an audience peek in as they kiss and enjoy each other in the moment, which of course is reflected in the photos! I had scouted this nook a couple weeks prior, and knew that the trick was to get there when the light was perfect, making that the priority when planning the timeline of the day. Plus, I love finding the magic in an environment that does not seem blatantly full of beauty! As Aaron Rose put it in such few words: “In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary.”

Alison & Adam – Winter Woodlands

After a long year of work and adventures in 2011, I told myself I should take it easy for a few weeks while spending Christmas with my family in Cincinnati, and not even think about bringing my camera gear with me. So I packed light, and headed home with merely a carry-on bag, feeling very smug about it.
Soon after arriving, I get news that an old friend and his new fiancée would be in town briefly. Adam and Ali are both amazing photographers, so I was honored when they asked me to take a few engagement shots. Admittedly, I had a pinch of trepidation to aim a camera at two very talented creative individuals, especially without my own gear.
I only had about an hour’s time to zip over to Adam’s house – while my spiced pear bundt cake was in the oven for Christmas eve’s dinner festivities. We walked into the woods surrounding his neighborhood and, above is what  came of it.

“Technically” speaking: Not gonna lie… The limited time frame combined with meeting one of my subjects for the first time, combined with navigating a camera that had different settings (with my cold, cold hands) trying to incorporate the oh-so-many trees in a way that wasn’t distracting from the couple… was definitely an exercise that had me on my toes!
I usually scout my locations well before a shoot. I’m a planner. I like to plan. It makes me feel comfortable about having some control over enough variables that I can then have more liberty to play around during the shoot itself. All that aside, it’s healthy to be able to pick up a camera and make the best of it! Maybe I should make a game of it with my fellow photographer friends; A photo challenge-of-the-month where we’re thrust into a scene and all have a limited time-frame to come up with something creative! Yeah? Anyone?

All my best wishes to two wonderful human beings, uniting in marriage! ♥

Home

I have a hard time balancing work and play. It’s hard to turn off inspiration and put exciting ideas on hold to make time for other important things. That said, the more I learn my way through my “business”, the more I value the free time I have, and realize that spending time away from my work helps inspire it.

I started out the year settling into our new place in Santa Monica. One of the most exciting things was thinking of how to make the best use of our new yard! I bought a fig tree at the farmer’s market last year, which quickly unravelled into an overeager desire to fill my garden with veggie and fruit plants!

As I was flipping through my new gardening book one night, I turned to the page on ‘Making your own Plant Bed’ and Matthew coincidentally caught a glimpse of it, saying “I can make that”, as any manly man would. That was that. We dove right into it, finding ourselves at Home Depot the next day buying wood. Little did we know we’d end up with around $250 worth of redwood, completely unaware at the time of what it would cost to buy 35 bags of organic soil to fill it! Yikes! Spontaneity ain’t cheap sometimes!

But such is life! It’s not just the food we will be able to grow ourselves, it’s about spending time outside tending to the garden every day, and becoming lost in it in a meditative sort of way. Watching your seedlings grow is wondrous. So there, financial investment completely justified!

As you can see above, we were assisted by not one, but two little mutts! Those of you who have known me for a bit, know that our chihuahua Cocoa is a sort of deity in our household. We are devoted to making sure she is always in a complete state of comfort and bliss. Any of you who have met her, understand why. I am speaking objectively here.

I had been half-seriously joking about getting a second dog. Since our love for Cocoa is the overflowing kind of love, we need a second being to receive the overflow. It’s simple math really. After months and months, Matthew caved, and I immediately began my online quest to find a good fit from nearby animal shelters. It is heart-breaking to see so many dogs eagerly awaiting adoption, but I knew I had to stick to my criteria to make a choice that would be permanent; that would work with our lifestyles and would be healthy for the new dog.

On the second day of searching we came across “Angel” at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter. I saw her frightened but sweet stare for the first time in her cage and my brain turned to action with a subtle anxious overtone: “we need someone to help us. We need someone to get this dog out of the kennel for us before someone else sees her. Find someone. Where is someone?” She had been there for at least 4 months, so I was the only one in a rush to get her, apparently.

We have had “Fig” (as we re-named her) for several weeks now.  She is gaining confidence each day, and continues to be utterly loyal to Cocoa, following her like a shadow. Cocoa is taking it quite well, surprisingly… most of the time.

It has been an adventurous start to 2012, by my standards. I am now getting ready to shift gear a little bit and start devoting more time again to my work with the approaching engagement and wedding season, for which I am beyond excited!!

Lydia McD - Wow. Incredibly sweet pictures of your family. I’m envious of your garden set-up since mine, while pseudo-raised bed, is pretty slapdash. Good on ya for taking in a shelter dog, and thanks for the lovely blog.

Maru - Hope I can eat some of those delicious veggies someday :) Love the fact you to took time off to invest it in gardening and animal loving. It’s not easy having your own business and balancing it out with personal life even harder. You are a role model… The way you balance everything out….amazing. TQ…

Sweet Valentine

Ever since my camera became an additional limb to my being, I fantasized of having a muse and harbored amusing resentment to my male photographer friends for their opportunity of having a muse when involved in a romantic relationship. In my experience, most men are not so fond of having a camera pointed in their direction. I was starting to come to terms with the fact that my clear sexual orientation meant I would never have a girlfriend and therefore never have a personal 24/7 access muse to photograph, until about a year ago. My great friend and fellow photographer Joe, met sweet and lovely Aja. Of course I was ecstatic for him to have found such a beautiful and amazing woman, but as soon as I saw her impossibly bright blue eyes for the first time, it was love at first sight for me as well. Aja has not only become a dear friend, she is as close to a muse as I will ever have, and I am thankful for both! She recently asked me to do a session to create some “special” photographs for Joe, and these are some from that day.

This is exactly how I want my clients to feel when they are doing a boudoir shoot with me: as if they asked a good friend (who conveniently knows how to handle a camera amazingly well) to take some sexy photos for their man, and feel comfortable and beautiful and just have fun!
